Entry requirements
You must normally be aged 16 or above to register, but there are no formal academic qualifications necessary. If you have no academic qualifications, you will be expected to complete all three Levels of the Certified Accounting Technician examinations. On the other hand, previous qualifications may entitle you to exemptions from some of the CAT exams. This means that you will start your studies at the most appropriate level according to your knowledge and skills, and, more importantly, avoid studying subjects you already know.
Exemptions
Holders of certain qualifications may receive exemptions from some of the papers. In order to establish your exemption status please provide ACCA with the name of the institution at which you have previously studied and the name(s) of your existing qualification(s).
You may claim exemption from the Introductory Level exams if you satisfy the one year's practical work experience requirement and can verify this by completing your Technician Training Record (TTR), which will be sent to you when you have registered as a CAT student.
Plus if you already have an NQF level 4 in Accounting, you will not need to complete the practical experience requirement.
How do I register my exemptions?
In order to register for your exemptions you must first register as a CAT student (see above). Once registered you are required to send in a certified copy of your qualification certificate to ACCA South Africa at:
ACCA South Africa
PO Box 924
Saxonwold 2132
Fax: 27 (0)11 268 6374
You can search for your qualification and see which exemptions you can claim on the ACCA global website here.
Exams
There are nine papers in total to complete, including two out of three option papers at Advanced Level. You can choose to change your optional papers if you wish.
You can sit the papers in any order, but it is advised to attempt them in numerical order. You can also sit as many or as few papers as you like at each exam, although more than four papers in a six-month period is not recommended.
There is no time limit to completing the exams and individual subject passes are allowed for all papers.
The pass mark is 50%.
Knowledge Module exams are held at registered CBE centres around the country. Please contact the ACCA website to find out where your nearest CBE centre is located.
Skills Module and all Professional Level exams are held at appointed ACCA exam centres in large cities around the country. Please consult the ACCA website for more information about your nearest exam centre.
The following is a list of South African exam centres:

When and where are the exams?
The CAT syllabus is examined by a combination of paper-based and computer-based exams. At Introductory and Intermediate Levels of the CAT exams, you can choose to sit some or all of these papers as computer-based exams (CBEs).
CBEs offer you the flexibility to sit papers outside the set June and December exam sessions, providing immediate access to your results upon completion - CBEs are held at ACCA CBE Licensed Centres. Contact ACCA (SA) to find out where your nearest CBE centre is.
Paper-based exams (including all the advanced level exams) are held twice a year in June and December and can be sat in any ACCA exam centre.

How much do the exams cost?
2010 Exam Fees:
| Introductory Level: per paper |
GBP 40 |
| Intermediate Level: per paper | GBP 40 |
| Advanced Level: per paper | GBP 57 |
NB. If you qualify for exemptions you are required to pay the same examination fee per exempted subject.
Once registered and you know which exams you would like to sit for, you are required to register for each exam either with your chosen CBE centre or CAT South Africa (for paper-based exams).
Practical experience requirement
In addition to completing the exams, you will also need to gain at least one year's relevant, supervised work experience in order to qualify and use the CAT letters after your name. Practical training can be completed in any size or type of business, and in any combination of sectors, before, during or after completing the exams. You must meet 10 competence unit requirements for CAT status.
Previous qualifications may also entitle you to claim exemption from the practical experience requirement, for example, completion of an NQF Accounting at Level 4.
