Entry requirements
The CIMA qualifications are open to everyone. Your entry level will depend upon your previous experience.
The qualifications are similar in standard to undergraduate and postgraduate studies. You will need a good standard of mathematics and to be proficient in the English language.
Exemptions
You could be eligible for exemptions from selected CIMA papers, depending on your previous studies. If you’ve already studied a relevant qualification - such as a degree or a professional qualification in accounting or business subjects - you may not need to sit all the exams.
Once you’ve registered with CIMA you can apply and pay for exemptions. You can search for your qualification and find out more about accelerated routes to the CIMA qualification on the CIMAglobal website here.
Exams
Certificate Level
Computer Based Assessment (CBA) is used to assess all 5 Certificate level subjects. Each of the 5 assessments can be taken flexibly whenever you are ready. There is no registration cut-off time.
IBTC is the registered CBA centre for the Western Cape. To book an exam, make a booking on this site now. For Johannesburg and all other areas contact CIMA directly on 011 7888 723.
All the exams are two hours.
Computer Based Assessments use objective test questions. The most common type is 'multiple choice', where you have to choose the correct answer from a list of possible answers, but there are a variety of other objective question types that can be used within the system. These include true/false questions, matching pairs of text and graphic, sequencing and ranking, labelling diagrams and single and multiple numeric entries.
The pass mark for each subject is 50% and you will receive your results and a Certificate of Achievement immediately after the assessment. If you are unsuccessful, you will receive some feedback on your performance in the assessment.
Operational, management, strategic and professional competence exams
The professional level of CIMA is examined via traditional paper-based examinations which are held at CIMA exam centres throughout the country. All exams are 3 hours long and take place during the last week of May and November each year. There are also two computer based sittings for the test of professional competence each year in March and September. Strategic level rewrites can also take place then.
The pass mark for all exams is 50%.
Exam entry takes place online via 'MyCIMA'
Exam entry closing dates
14 March (to write the May exam)
14 September (to write the November exam)
NB. Late entries will incur additional fees
You may only enter papers at one exam centre.
You are required to register for each examination by using CIMA's online registration facility ('MyCIMA'), no email or paper entries will be accepted. Within 24 hours of entering you will receive an email confirmation of your entry. If you do not receive this you should check your exam entry carefully. If all the papers you want to sit are displayed you do not need to do anything else apart from post payment - if you did not pay online. If your entry is not displayed then it is likely that you did not complete your entry. You will need to start again.
You need to have completed or be exempt from all Certificate level exams before you are able to enter for any Operational level papers. To enter for Strategic level you need to have completed the Managerial level. To sit the Case Study Exam at the T4 level you need to have completed and passed all 3 Strategic level papers.
