Entry requirements
The series of learning areas is designed so that a learner who is 16 years or older and/or has a NQF level 2 qualification (grade 10 or equivalent) will be able to enter the programme. No previous accounting knowledge is required.
Exemptions
If a learner has previously completed other accredited study programmes or qualifications in accounting, then certain individual programme exemptions may be available via the process of Accredited Prior Learning (APL). This is also valid for learners who have picked up experience and competence by virtue of employment or other experience and training through the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).To find out more about the exemption process, please contact the ICB Institute at admin@icb.org.za or on the following number: 27 (0)21 685 2746.
Exams
Important note: You are required to register and pay for your exam fee directly with ICB. Your IBTC tuition fee does NOT include exam fees and only includes Member Registration fees if specifically stipulated on the IBTC invoice.
For learning areas 1-8 (Junior Bookkeeper, Senior Bookkeeper, Technical Financial Accountant) you will be assessed through a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) structure. This means you will have assignments and tests (formative assessments) that count 30% towards your overall mark and a final exam (summative assessment) that contributes the remaining 70%. Only for the module in Computerised Bookkeeping do the formative assessments count for 70% and the final exam 30%.
The overall pass mark is 60% but you have to get at least 50% in your final exam.
You need to register for the assessments as soon as you start your studies so that ICB can forward you the PoE as you need it to complete both the formative and the summative assessments.
You need to submit an Assessment Entry Form with payment to ICB. They will then send you an ICB Assessment Envelope which contains the formative assessments. You have to notify ICB of your chosen summative assessment date at least 6 weeks before the intended date.
The ICB Assessment Envelope will be personalised and will contain the following:
- Introduction letter
- Assessment Entry Confirmation Form (containing unique ICB learner number and date of assessment)
- ICB membership Registration Form
- ICB Assessment Policy
- ICB Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) containing necessary administrative documentation, assessment instructions and formative activity answer templates
- 3 Formative activity question papers (Formative activities 1,2 and 3)
- 2 Formative evaluation question papers (Formative evaluations 1 and 2)
- 2 Formative evaluation answer books (Formative evaluations 1 and 2)
Once you have completed the PoE, it is the learner's responsibility to forward this completed PoE with the required fees to the ICB. The ICB will then forward the POE to the assessor responsible for the learning area. Once assessed, learners will be advised on the outcome of the assessment.
When and where are the exams?
Exams/Assessments are held at approved assessment centres. All candidates within a radius of 100 kilometres of an official assessment centre will automatically be allocated to one of these centres. Learners not close to the official assessments centres (within a 150km radius), will be required to arrange for their own invigilation. These details are to be submitted to the Institute on the prescribed application form and should be signed by the Invigilator.
All applications for assessments are to be submitted together with the completed application form and relevant payment to the ICB's offices by the closing date. Late entries for the assessments will be penalised and learners intending to write these assessments will be required to pay the late entry fee up to and including the date for late registration for assessments.
Assessments are held in February, May, August and November.
